WHAT HAPPENED WHEN I HIT MY FIRST $5K MONTH IN BUSINESS
For Virtual Assistants and online service providers
I started my business the end of July 2021 and quit my 9-5 job just a couple months in. At the end of 2021 I decided to set a goal for myself: to make $5K in one month from my business. I saw so. many. online service providers and coaches talking about 5, 10, adnd 15K months. I decided I need to reach this too in order to feel successful or like I had “made it”.
I thought maybe I would hit this number around 3-5 months into the year. I hit the goal in January.
So how did I feel? Happy, proud, excited?! Not at all. The same month I hit this "income goal" is also the most stressed, burnt out, and frustrated I had felt in my business so far.
I was so disappointed… people had led me to believe that if I could just hit this goal I would have the business of my dreams! So why didn’t this happen? I had forgetten why I started my business. Sure, money is great and allows us to do amazing things, but I was chasing a number instead of the life I desired.
A big motivating factor for me when deciding to quit my 9-5 was the ability to have freedom. But somewhere along the way as I was working so hard to hit a $5K month I had become more tied down and “trapped” than ever.
I learned that $5K, $15K, $100K months mean nothing if you aren't living in alignment. If you don't have the systems & support you need to make getting there enjoyable.
So why do I share all this?
1) To be an example of what can happen if you are chasing a number instead of impact and creating the life you want.
2) To show you that support is crucial. I held out on getting help from someone who was farther along in their business and didn’t outsourcing out of fear that my biz "wasn't ready" and had convinced myself I could "do it all".
These realizations prompted me to make the following changes:
Parted ways with a client who wasn't in my niche and wasn’t bringing me joy
I raised my rates to reflect my current experience, knowledge, and expertise (scary but necessary!)
I joined a coaching program to continue to learn and help me redirect/refocus
Stopped chasing clients & a certain number, trusting that I will attract what is meant for me
And guess what? It paid off! Fast forward a year and I know consistently make at least $5K months, have an amazing assistant to help me and have the time freedom I desired.
All because I decided to take a step back and recognize my why.
I am now building my business around my life, not building my life around my business.
If that means outsourcing, I will. If that means making hard choices and letting go of clients, I will. If that means asking for help, I will. So here's to building the life & business that best fits OUR desires, not the ones we think we should have.
